PHEN Director of Clinical Trials and Patient Education Dr. Keith Crawford gave a presentation about genetics and prostate cancer. He explained how DNA impacts traits and defined key vocabulary. Further, Dr. Crawford described the benefits of genetic testing, such as learning that you may need to begin prostate cancer testing earlier than men with no genetic risks. He also outlined how BRCA genetic mutations can put entire families at risk of both breast and prostate cancer. However, 90% of prostate cancers are not passed on from father to son and, instead, come about due to somatic mutations taking place during cell division.
Genetic testing for prostate cancer is important because it can allow you to begin testing early and obtain a diagnosis before the disease spreads. When caught early, you will have more than a 95% chance of long-term (10+ years) survival. Dr. Crawford shared the PHENPM.com portal, which includes more information about prostate cancer genetics. He also answered audience questions.
