Cancer Among Young Men with Dr. Kathleen Cooney

PHEN Ambassador and prostate cancer survivor Dr. Artie Shelton moderated a session about prostate cancer among young men during a PHEN Summit. He described his prostate cancer journey including screening and radical prostatectomy surgery. Dr. Shelton also introduced Dr. Kathleen Cooney from the University of Michigan. Dr. Cooney explained that she is a medical oncologist who treats patients with advanced cancer, and then discussed hereditary and genetic cancers.

She went over her research about the family history of prostate cancer patients. In particular, she detailed a prostate cancer gene called the HOXB13 gene. Her research showed that men with a family history of the disease have a two-fold increased risk of having this genetic mutation.

Further, she described how Black men are at higher risk of prostate cancer as compared to all other men. Her presentation illustrates that prostate cancer is the second highest cause of cancer death among men in the United States, which is why early detection screening is so essential. She also explained how younger men tend to have more aggressive forms of prostate cancer and answered audience questions.
