Prostate Cancer Early Detection – The Next Chapter with Dr. Ruth Etzioni

Dr. Ruth Etzioni from the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center showed graphics of prostate cancer trends and population data from 1975 to 2013 in her presentation. There has been a decline in mortality rates due to a growth in prostate cancer screening rates and improved treatment for localized prostate cancer.

Dr. Etzioni also provided a graph showing how adoption of PSA screening drastically increased starting in the 1990s. In a European clinical trial, she described there was a 20% drop in prostate cancer deaths or one life saved per 1,000 men. She explained how understanding the statistics and data behind prostate cancer can help researchers project survival rates and cancer detection rates before metastasis. Then, the data can help uncover mortality impacts.

Most importantly, Dr. Etzioni’s research found that African American men have higher prostate cancer rates, get it at a younger age, and have a larger risk for the disease at every age.
