Beyond the Patient: Making Caregivers Visible, Valued and Supported

Marvell Adams Jr. examines the essential but frequently overlooked role of America’s family caregivers.

Adams describes caregivers as the “invisible infrastructure of care,” providing critical assistance with appointments, medications, finances, treatment plans and daily living—often without adequate training, coordination or support. He also discusses the emotional, physical and financial burdens of caregiving and the isolation many caregivers experience.

He calls on healthcare systems to identify caregivers early, include them in care planning and assess their needs and capacity. He also introduces free education, personalized guidance, support groups and other resources available through the Caregiver Action Network.
