Ms. Tomeeka Miller, PHEN’s Director of Communications, narrated and developed a separate video celebrating PHEN’s 20 years of summits for each of the four summit sessions taking place during September 2024. This video details the topics covered and speakers present during the 2010 – 2014 summits.
The sixth summit was held on Capitol Hill on September 16-17, 2010, which focused on treatments, clinical trials, and prostate cancer research. The summit also awarded recognitions to Senator John Kerry and Congressman Gregory Meeks for their support of PHEN and its initiatives. The 2011 summit was held at the US Capitol Building and the Washington Convention Center with a focus on the progress to reduce the prostate cancer racial disparity and PHEN’s community outreach/awareness efforts.
“2012 was a landmark year for PHEN. With the help of Congressman Gregory Meeks in the House and Senator John Kerry, PHEN helped co-author and get passed Senate Resolution 529,” stated Ms. Miller. “This landmark action recognized prostate cancer among African American men as a crisis of epidemic proportions and urged federal agencies to address that health crisis by supporting education, awareness, outreach, and research specifically focused on how prostate cancer affects African American men.”
Most importantly, this video presentation described the danger of the United States Preventive Services Task Force recommendation against early detection PSA testing, especially for African American men and others with a family history of prostate cancer.
