On Wednesday, December 10, 2025, PHEN held a Managing Survivorship Webinar dedicated to minimizing stress and using coping strategies to alleviate anxiety and depression amid cancer treatments during the holiday season.
Key speakers include:
- Dr. Heather Honoré Goltz, Professor of Social Work, University of Houston
- Dr. Keith Crawford, PHEN Director of Patient Education and Clinical Trials
- Dr. James Smith, PHEN Ambassador and retired psychiatrist
- Rev. Blane J. Newberry, Associate Pastor, Enon Tabernacle Baptist Church & prostate cancer survivor
These speakers explained to more than 140 attendees how to celebrate the holidays without stress by utilizing key coping strategies. The webinar began with Dr. Crawford asking the audience to create a holiday plan using the following pathways.
- One portion should be dedicated to what matters most to you during the holidays.
- A second part should be dedicated to determining your boundaries.
- Another section should focus on your red flags.
Dr. Goltz also discussed important ways prostate cancer patients can keep their mental health strong during the holiday season.
“We all have our faith, love, and friendships,” Dr. Goltz said. “Over the course of our lives, these things get wired in. When we are at our best, this time of year can reflect the best of us. When we are not at our best, this time of year reminds us of that.”
“Drawing boundaries is really important – it is one of the most important things you can do this time of year… to be fully present for your family and friends,” continued Dr. Goltz.
Rev. Newberry also explained how helpful faith has been in his life as a prostate cancer survivor.
“Faith is extremely important because it gives you inner peace,” he mentioned. “It gives you the ability to exercise various disciplines [such as] prayer [and] meditation.”
Dr. James Smith discussed the top signs of depression and anxiety and offered key coping strategies to produce resilience.
“Depression affects our ability to concentrate,” explained Dr. Smith. “At a time like this, folks shouldn’t make any major decisions… How can we develop resilience? Try to be active. Set realistic goals. Spend time with other people and let others help. Confide in that trusted friend.”
The webinar attendees were given a survey to complete, and 98% indicated that they were satisfied with the meeting and presentation. In addition, 89% now understand how to set healthy boundaries, care for their minds, draw strength from faith, and speak with family members about their needs. Further, 90% now know where they can get help in a crisis.
