Arthur L. Burnett, II, MD, MBA, FACS
Professor in Urology and Laboratory Director
Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine
Dr. Arthur Burnett from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine provided a presentation on sexual health among prostate cancer patients in partnership with PHEN in January 2022. He discussed the numerous possible sexual dysfunctions that can occur due to prostate cancer treatments and the disease itself. For example, due to radical prostatectomy surgeries, patients are more likely to face erectile dysfunction (ED). However, due to cavernous nerve-sparing methods, the risk of ED has decreased in recent years.
Further, Dr. Burnett discussed the different types of therapies, including oral medications, couples counseling, and surgeries, that can help patients better manage sexual dysfunctions like ED. Dr. Burnett also answered questions from the audience about sexual dysfunction due to prostate cancer. Lastly, the audience took a survey about the presentation, and PHEN President Thomas Farrington delivered the poll results during the session.

How long after surgery to remove you prostate should you wait to seek ED treatment?
Enjoyed presentation.
Enjoy The presentation. I have one question. How long is to long to try and reverse the Nerves .
Seek ED treatment throughout the whole process. Counseling throughout. True physical treatments as soon as you are ready for sexual activity.
Nerve function recovery with healing may take as long as 2-3 years. At a minimum, it is likely 1 year.
