Survivor Sherman Womack Shares His Prostate Cancer Journey with Androgen Deprivation Therapy

Twenty-year prostate cancer survivor and PHEN Ambassador Sherman Womack shared his cancer journey during the July 2024 Managing Survivorship Meeting. Womack was first diagnosed in 2004 and underwent surgery in February 2005. His last prostate cancer treatment took place in November 2023.

He is being treated with Androgen Deprivation Therapy (ADT) and has been on Lupron for 15 years. His side effects from from ADT include hot flashes, weight gain, and sleep deprivation. Generally, the side effects haven’t “been so bad,” Mr. Womack explained. While the hot flashes were more difficult, he learned to manage them within six months by staying away from sweet treats and spicy foods. To stay healthier, Sherman has exercised by walking more and embracing a plant-based diet with vegetables, poultry, and fish.

“I may have prostate cancer, but prostate cancer does not have me,” concluded Womack.
