Prostate cancer is a serious crisis throughout the African American community. More than twice as many African American men die from prostate cancer as all other men. Robert Smith, M.D., is a general practitioner in Mississippi as well as the President and Chief Executive Officer of Mississippi Family Health Center, Ltd. since it was first founded in 1963. Dr. Smith is native to Terry, MS. In addition, he is the founder of the Medical Committee for Human Rights. This organization helped African Americans gain access to healthcare services while ending unequal treatment across southern states during the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s.
Dr. Smith obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree in Chemistry from Tougaloo College and his medical degree from the Howard University School of Medicine. He also received clinical training at Cook County Hospital. He is a Charter Fellow at the American Academy of Family Physicians and a Charter Diplomat at the American Board of Family Physicians. In addition, the Robert Smith, MD Graduate Scholars Program, which is a graduate-level certificate program, was established to honor Dr. Smith. Doctoral students in the program are called Smith Scholars.
