Three U.S. Congressmen Participated in the Rally and Were Recognized for Their Years of Support

U.S. Congressman Gregory Meeks (Queens), former Congressman Edolphus Towns (Brooklyn), and Congressman Donald Payne Jr. (Newark) participated in the Disparity Rally for New York, New Jersey and Philadelphia. The support of these leaders to PHEN’s efforts dates back to 2005.

U.S. Congressman Gregory Meeks (NY-D5; since 1988)

  • Joined Massachusetts Senator John Kerry to host PHEN’s first African American Prostate Cancer Disparity Summit in 2005
  • Sponsored PHEN’s Annual Prostate Cancer Disparity Summit as part of the Congressional Black Caucus Annual Legislature Conference each year since 2005
  • Sponsored legislation within the U.S. House of Representatives to recognize prostate cancer as a crisis among black men (2012)
  • Hosted a PHEN educational symposium at his church in Queens (Allen Cathedral Church – 2016 & 2017)

U.S. Congressman Edolphus Towns (NY-D10) from 1983 to 2013:

  • Recorded a prostate cancer awareness message for PHEN in 2005
  • Spoke at PHEN’s Annual Prostate Cancer Disparity Summit in 2008
  • Participated in PHEN’s Rally to Live on Capitol Hill in November 2011
  • As Chair of the U.S. House Oversight Committee, Congressman Towns held a hearing on prostate cancer screening and treatment (2010)
  • Hosted a PHEN educational symposium at his church in Brooklyn (Berean Baptist Church – 2016 & 2017)

U.S. Congressman Donald Payne Jr. (NJ-D10; since 2013):

  • Spoke at the 2018 African American Prostate Cancer Disparity Summit
  • In March 2018, Payne joined colleagues to request $100 million for prostate cancer research
  • In April 2018, Payne introduced a resolution to support the quality of life for prostate cancer patients
