Effective Community Awareness, Outreach and Engagement Strategies

PHEN launched its “Prostate Cancer Disparity Rally” in 2021 as a national effort to raise awareness and mobilize support within local communities nationwide. This effort includes developing public service announcements by political leaders, doctors, patients, and community leaders which are promoted via social media, radio, and e-newsletters. This also includes the Daddy’s Boys film episodes. This session reviewed these activities, and discussed plans for expanding this on-going awareness rally.

Enhancing Early Detection Treatments and Clinical Trials Education

Innovative tools and approaches to enhance patient education have been developed and launched by PHEN. These include Dr. PSA for early detection screening, PHENPath.com for treatments, and the Clinical Trials Rally II initiative. Each facilitates informed shared decision – making by empowering both patients and doctors. This session reviews strategies and outcomes using these tools and approaches.

Policies, Cost and Social Determinants of Health Factors Impacting the Prostate Cancer Disparity

This session provided an understanding about social determinants of health. It identified and explored factors that impact on the prostate cancer racial disparity. Costs of treatment and care that can prove toxic in limiting patient access is presented as well as important policy initiatives that can help eliminate the racial disparity.

The Impact of COVID-19 on the Prostate Cancer Racial Disparity

COVID-19 delayed prostate cancer early detection screening and treatments. It also ushered in an increased use of telemedicine for prostate cancer care which is anticipated to expand and become more of a standard of care. This session assessed the impact of the pandemic, with a focus on how the increased use of telemedicine will impact the prostate cancer racial disparity based on the experiences and perspectives of doctors and patients.
