At PHEN’s 14th Annual African American Prostate Cancer Disparity Summit in 2018, Dr. James Roberson II, Dr. Compton Benjamin Jr., and Dr. Artie Shelton participated in a Prostate Cancer Early Detection Panel. The discussion revolved around the US Preventive Services Task Force’s recommendation in 2012 to forgo early detection screening for prostate cancer, which adversely affected Black men. Dr. Benjamin explained how family physicians decreased the rates of screening among African American men after this recommendation came out.
Dr. Roberson explained his own experience with prostate cancer, mentioning how he would not have been diagnosed early if he followed the recommendation from the USPSTF. He explained how the studies USPSTF used did not have adequate numbers of Black men. However, their recommendation was revised in later years to align better with the fact that Black men are at higher risk of prostate cancer.
